Church Community HallIf you live in the area, you will know there is a lovely old church on the Green at Higher St Budeaux, where Sir Francis Drake was married, but did you know there is also a Hall tucked away behind the old Blue Monkey pub site? The St Budeaux Church Community Hall exists so we can share our love for God and our community by enabling local people to have a place where they can meet together for leisure and learning, or for whatever they want. You may not realise how much it is being used at the moment and by a wide range of groups and people and it is also available to hire for parties and social events. We are dedicated to improving and upgrading the Community Hall, with a strong Christian ethos, to provide more and accessible recreational and leisure activities, in a safe, clean and welcoming environment, inclusive to people of all ages and abilities in the local community.
Our Committee formed in 2010 as a Community Group, separate from the Church, who own the Hall, with our own Bank Account. However, once The Parochial Church Council registered as a Charity, in the interests of financial transparency, we have become a Sub-Committee of the PCC and our funds are paid into their Bank Account, but ringfenced for Hall Development.
Our aim is the same – to make our rather ‘tired-looking’ 1960s built Hall more modern and up-to-date and complying with all legal and health and hygiene requirements. Subject to suitability, anyone can hire the Hall for an event or meeting.
Our plan is still to work our way round the Upper and Lower Halls, modernising, replacing and upgrading facilities. We have achieved a lot already but still have some way to go to complete our objectives.
Although we have not yet completed the upgrading work in the Upper Hall (Male toilets and Committee Room/Office), we have decided to prioritise addressing access to the Lower Hall. This is because it is at present inaccessible to those with mobility issues – currently only having access via inside stairs from the Upper Hall and a ramp outside, which is too steep for safe access, especially for wheelchairs.
We have Hall Facebook page, so you can keep up to date with what is going on – why not pay us a visit, especially if you think it might be just the place for a party or event you are planning? Just contact our Hall Bookings Manager and come along and have an informal chat and look around. We are confident that with this upgrading and refurbishment, we can offer more, much needed activities and create more social, educational and leisure opportunities to more people, both locally and in Plymouth as a City.
We have so far raised funds through the following grants:
